The Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and Rheinische Post both report that it is increasingly likely that Xabi Alonso will stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
The main reason behind Alonso likely staying at Leverkusen is that he is fully involved with the planning of the squad for next season, whilst he has yet to give any sort of indication that he would do otherwise.
Last season, Alonso announced the decision on his future on March 29th and it has previously been suggested by Bild that the Spaniard could do the same thing on March 27th in his pre-match press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s game against Bochum.
But, as things stand, it would be a surprise if Alonso were to leave the BayArena in the summer.
Real Madrid remain interested in the former midfielder, but the future of current head coach Carlo Ancelotti is unlikely to be resolved until the end of the season and it is questionable if Alonso will wait that long for a decision to be made.
This summer is expected to be a busy one at the BayArena. Leverkusen are said to be planning a large overhaul of their squad. This could provide them with a breath of fresh air which they can then use to either try and win back the Bundesliga title, or retain it.
