Speaking to Prime Video, VfB Stuttgart goalscorer Deniz Undav reacted to their 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in their opening Champions League tie.
In the first half, Stuttgart were the better team as they not only muted Madrid’s attack but they also had the best chances of the half with Enzo Millot having two clear-cut chances one saved by Thibaut Courtois, while the other went the wrong side of the post. and Undav himself hitting the crossbar.
Madrid would then score right at the beginning of the second half against the run of the game. Undav would then equalise for Stuttgart as they continued to be the dominant side but late goals from Antonio Rüdiger and Endrick secured the win for the hosts.
On the game, Undav said:
“We knew that we would have the ball most of the time. We knew that if we didn’t score against Real, we would be punished, and that’s what happened. We had control of the game and we had to score in the first half.”
It has been estimated that around 20k fans had travelled to watch Stuttgart in Madrid. On the fans who supported the team until the very end, the striker commented:
“It’s indescribable, you can see what kind of fans we have. They’re still here, most of them probably drunk. We always have a good atmosphere, away and at home. I’m grateful to the fans, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for a win.”
If Stuttgart play like they did at the Bernabeu against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, they could probably beat their opponents. VfB’s next Champions League game Is at home against Sparta Prague at the beginning of October.
